Our History
A classic story of rags-to-riches
Joseph Tanenbaum’s story is a classic rags-to-riches saga of a turn-of-the-century immigrant family that faced poverty, hardships and overwhelming odds to become one of the wealthiest business and philanthropic families in Canada.
A self-taught entrepreneur, Joseph started out as a tradesperson in the construction business and worked his way up, eventually starting his own company. In its early years, the company was involved in large projects of steel fabrication and erection.
Some of the famous structures built by the company in its early years include Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway, the Burlington Skyway and Manitoba’s Grand Rapids Bridge across the raging Saskatchewan River. After three decades of steel fabrication, Runnymede turned its attention and development expertise to the sphere of land development and construction.
The company bought thousands of acres of land in the metro Toronto area and started building industrial business parks and commercial plazas. Capitalizing on this success, Runnymede then started building residential lowrise communities.
Runnymede constructed over 10,000 homes across multiple award winning communities that helped to shape the urban landscape of the GTA.
